North Korea's Kim Jong Un gets promoted to de facto No. 2 post: report

SEOUL (Kyodo) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's son and heir Jong Un has been promoted to vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, the country's top decision-making body, placing him at the de facto No. 2 post, a Seoul daily reported Wednesday.

The Chosun Ilbo cited a high-level North Korea source in its report as saying that the promotion for the younger Kim was made on Feb. 10 in front of thousands of senior officers of the People's Army, the Internal Security Forces, the State Security Department, and the Ministry of Public Security.

The promotion was made just five months after he was appointed to key posts in the Workers' Party and the military, and first publicly paraded at a rare party congress in September last year.

His appointment in principle needs to be ratified by the Supreme People's Assembly, which meets in April, but that is a rubber stamp body and ratification a mere formality, the daily said.

Meanwhile, South Korea's Unification Ministry spokeswoman Lee Jong Joo said in a news briefing that nothing has been verified regarding the report on Kim Jong Un's latest promotion.
