DAMASCUS: At least one person was killed yesterday and more than 100 wounded when Syrian security forces fired on protesters in Deraa two days after four demonstrators died in clashes there, rights

activists said.

Crowds set fire to the headquarters of the ruling Baath Party in Deraa yesterday, residents said, as the wave of unrest in the Arab world shook even one of its most authoritarian states.

It was the third consecutive day of demonstrations in Deraa, south of the capital Damascus, with protesters demanding “freedom” and an end to 48 years of emergency laws.

A rights activist at the scene said the town had turned into a “volcano” and anger flared further after a high-level government delegation arrived to offer condolences to the families of protesters killed on Friday.

A total of five people have been killed since Friday. AFP
