13 May in History

1846--The United States declares war on Mexico.

1861--England recognizes the Confederacy as a belligerant when it declares neutrality.

1912--The Royal Flying Corps, which later becomes the Royal Air Force, is established.

1940--Germany invades France.  Winston Churchill gives his Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat speech to the nation.

1943--The Afrika Korps surrenders in Tunisia to the Allies.

1981--Mehment Ali Agca attempts to assassinate Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square, Vatican City.

1989--Large numbers of Chinese students begin to gather, demonstrate and go on a hunger strike in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
