1429--Joan of Arc ends the siege of Orleans.

1718--New Orleans, Lousiana is founded by Jean Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville

1763--The French and Indian Wars begin with Chief Pontiac's Rebellion--Fort Detroit is attacked.

1824--Ludwig Van Beethoven's 9th Symphony is performed for the first time.

1832--Greece regains independence from the Ottoman Empire.

1915--German submarine SM U-20 sinks the R.M.S. Lusitania, a prelude to United States entry into World War One.

1942--During the Battle of the Coral Sea, U.S. Navy warplanes sink the Japanese carrier, IJNS Shoho--the first time surface fleets engaged in battle without seeing one another.

1945--Germany surrenders unconditionally at Reims, France.

1954--France is defeated in the Battle of Diem Bien Phu, Vietnam.

1960--Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev announces the the Soviet Union is holding U-2 pilot, Francis Gary Powers.
